HighAltMed Chile (High Altitude Medicine Chile) is a website created to favor different professionals and researches national and internationals on the transfer, exchange and disclosures of information and science related to High Altitude Physiology and medicine in a clear, accessible and precise language.
This plataform is destined to strengthen and deepens high altitude physiology and medicine knowledge based on evidence applied to different scopes such as occupational health, sports, tourist activities, training and research. This study is supported by ANID/CONICYT Fondecyt Iniciación (Project Nº11180503) and sponsored by University of Antofagasta.
Chile is a country with geographic and climatic unique conditions in the world. Chilean north have great beauty, the clearest skies on the planet, abundant natural resources which harbor the biggest reservoir of nonmetallic minerals and cooper.
However, is located in extreme environment conditions such as humidity, solar radiation, high temperatures, among others, where barometric pressure and temperature are the most important adaptative physiologic mecanisms to overcome by men. High altitude work is so much for mining, astronomy and other related activities a pending challenge from a biomedical and social point of view even after several decades of development.
Pionner to this iniciative is Dr. Lang, who started to materialized this in august 2020 in the middle of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Her purpose is to foment education and disclosures of these knowledges, which are in constant update and sustained on scientific evidence. There is a strong conviction about this plataform as a place of motivation and starting point for futures studies and knowledge exchanges in order to give more access to present and futures findings for the communities involved in this high altitude situations, as well as a better appropriation of these concerns contents. In sum, strengthen the neccesary dialogue between scientific and general communities about this subject.
In this website, we hope to contribute with updated information and research about themes which encourage different vision exchanges between professional, technicians, researchers and workers for an improvement on working conditions and workers quality life.
In our country, a vast number of productive sectors workers operate at high altitude over sea level being exposed to Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH).
High altitude sport and physical activity performed both in Mining sites sport infrastructures and astronomy centers are usually executed in a similar way that at sea level.
